Weekends In Dominica

 If you want to experience nature in all its glory then the Island of Dominica is the place to be. While the temperature is above eighty degrees you'll find a lot there to keep you cool. 

On my first visit to Dominica, coming from Antigua where it was sunny and very hot on the day we were traveling, the first thing I noticed when we entered the Island's airspace was that it was raining and there was green all around. We were over the rainforest.

 We landed at the airport in Roseau and  on the drive from the airport, the sight of the river was very inviting. So inviting that before we got to where we would be staying, we had the taxi stop and let us out. We couldn't resist the crystal clear  water so we indulged, while still wearing our traveling clothes with our suitcases left on river stones. I have no regrets.

My first full day there took me to the market in the capital at five AM, where I enjoyed freshly squeezed sugar cane juice and orange juice straight from the fruit. Every juice I drank for the duration of the trip was directly from the fruit. I thought of my mom and aunt while I was there because I knew they would have loved being there.

 We also  journeyed to the emerald pool which is in the rainforest. We trekked through endless trees that are so tall, curving at the top blocking the view of the sky. The water in the emerald pool is cold but that won't stop you from jumping in. It's as if the water is calling you.

On our second day we took a drive up through the Carib Reserve and the view took me back to my history class where I learned about wattle houses. This is where you'll find the Kalinagos previously known as the Caribs. It was a learning experience as we drove through and saw the villagers and their way of living. Untroubled by how others in the mainland lived and very content there as well.

We ended up at Sulphur Lake on our third day. Where the water was bubbling with steam and is said to have healing properties. A quick dip is highly recommended. We moved on for a quick stop at Scotts Head which is the place to be for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. It's also a great place to hike to get to the peak of the Peninsula which gives a breathtaking view of the ocean visible all the way to Martinique.

Can't forget to mention the famous brick oven baked casava  bread and the broth I had. Some of the best tasting bread you'll ever have is baked right in Dominica.

To hear someone who is not Dominican say that they want to be from Dominica says it all. It is definitely the place to be for nature lovers. After all it's known as the nature isle.
